Dresden's baroque old town on the Elbe was painstakingly rebuilt after wartime destruction and is often called the 'Florence of the Elbe'. It sits on the ICE line between Berlin and Prague.

Local transport
Dresden's DVB trams and buses cover the city centre and suburbs efficiently. The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn in and around the city, though not long-distance ICE/IC trains.
Day trips
- Saxon Switzerland National Park (about 45 min) — Sandstone cliffs and the Bastei bridge, reached by S-Bahn and bus.
- Meissen (about 40 min) — The porcelain-making town on the Elbe.

Altstadt
The rebuilt baroque core: Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Semperoper and the Brühl Terrace.
Neustadt
North of the Elbe, the surviving pre-war quarter and the city's bar district.
Loschwitz
Villa suburbs upriver, reached by the historic funicular railways.
Food and drink
Saxon cooking runs to Sauerbraten and potato soup; Dresdner Christstollen is the city's protected Christmas cake, sold year-round in some bakeries. Local Radeberger Pilsner is brewed just outside town.
Practical notes
- Dresden Hbf and Dresden-Neustadt are both long-distance stops on opposite sides of the river.
- The Berlin–Dresden line has been upgraded, bringing the trip to roughly two hours.
- Elbe paddle steamers run upriver to Pillnitz and the Saxon Switzerland gorges in season.
