Deutschlandticket
One ticket, every regional train, bus and tram — €63 a month
The Deutschlandticket (often called the D-Ticket, and originally the 49-euro ticket) is a monthly subscription that covers local and regional public transport across the whole of Germany. Since January 2026 it costs €63 per calendar month.
The catch matters: it is not valid on ICE, IC or EC long-distance trains. It is a brilliant deal for slow, thorough travel and for city transport, and useless for crossing the country in a hurry.
What's included
- All regional and local trains: RB, RE, IRE and S-Bahn
- U-Bahn, trams and city buses in every participating network
- Valid nationwide, in every German transport association
- Second class only
What's not
- Long-distance trains: ICE, IC and EC
- FlixTrain and FlixBus, and other private long-distance operators
- First class
- Long-distance travel outside Germany
How the subscription works
- Price
- €63 per calendar month. Monthly subscription, charged per calendar month.
- Cancelling
- Cancellable each month up to the 10th, effective at month end.
- Format
- Digital, in an app or as a chip card — there is no paper version. A photo ID is checked with it.
Because it runs by calendar month, a ticket bought on the 25th still expires on the last day of that month. Visitors arriving late in a month usually get better value from single tickets or a city day pass.

The price is set politically each year, so treat it as reviewable rather than fixed.
Should a visitor buy one?
Yes, if…
- You are based in one or two cities for most of a calendar month
- You are happy on regional trains and have time — Munich to Berlin is possible, but takes most of a day
- You will use U-Bahn, trams and buses daily
- You are doing day trips into the countryside: the Rhine Valley, the Black Forest, the Bavarian Alps
No, if…
- Your trip crosses month boundaries awkwardly
- You need ICE speed between distant cities
- You are here for under a week and staying in one place — day passes cost less
- You do not want to manage a subscription you must cancel
