Freiburg
Freiburg is a sunny university city at the edge of the Black Forest, known for its Gothic minster and Bächle water runnels through the old town. It's a good base for exploring the Black Forest by regional train.

Local transport
Freiburg's VAG trams and buses cover the compact old town and surrounding hills. The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn in and around the city, though not long-distance ICE/IC trains.
Day trips
- Titisee (about 40 min) — A Black Forest lake popular for walking and cuckoo clocks.
- Basel (about 45 min) — The Swiss city on the Rhine, just across the border.

Altstadt
Cobbled centre with the Bächle water channels running along the streets.
Vauban
A car-light solar district south of the centre, reached by tram.
Schlossberg
The wooded hill above the old town, with a funicular and views to the Vosges.
Food and drink
Baden cooking is the richest in Germany: Black Forest ham, Flammkuchen and, of course, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Local Müller-Thurgau and Spätburgunder wines come from the Kaiserstuhl hills.
Practical notes
- Freiburg is the base for the Höllentalbahn line into the Black Forest towards Titisee.
- Basel is 45 minutes south; Basel Bad Bf is included in the German Rail Pass area.
- The tram network reaches almost every district and is covered by the Deutschlandticket.
