Local transport
The HVV network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries covers greater Hamburg. The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn in and around the city, though not long-distance ICE/IC trains.
Day trips
- Lübeck (about 45 min) — A Hanseatic old town of brick gothic churches and marzipan, on the Baltic side.
- Lüneburg (about 30 min) — A pretty former salt-trading town south of Hamburg.

Speicherstadt & HafenCity
The UNESCO-listed brick warehouse district and the new harbour quarter around the Elbphilharmonie.
St. Pauli
The Reeperbahn nightlife strip, plus the Sunday morning Fischmarkt.
Sternschanze
Independent shops and bars in a compact grid, one S-Bahn stop from the centre.
Altona
A second long-distance station and a calmer riverside neighbourhood to the west.
Food and drink
Fish dominates: Fischbrötchen from harbour kiosks, Matjes herring, and Labskaus, the sailor's beef-and-beetroot hash. Franzbrötchen, a cinnamon pastry, is the local bakery item.
Practical notes
- Some long-distance trains start or terminate at Hamburg-Altona rather than Hauptbahnhof — read your ticket carefully.
- Harbour ferry lines are part of the HVV public transport network, so the Deutschlandticket covers them.
- Elbphilharmonie Plaza viewing tickets are separate from concert tickets and often free to reserve online.
