Local transport
Heidelberg's compact old town is walkable, with local buses and trams run by RNV. The Deutschlandticket covers local buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn in and around the city, though not long-distance ICE/IC trains.
Day trips
- Mannheim (about 15 min) — A neighbouring city with a baroque palace, just a short ride away.
- Neckar Valley villages (about 30-45 min) — Small towns and castles along the Neckar reachable by regional train.
Neighbourhoods
Altstadt
A long, largely intact old town below the castle, about 15 minutes by bus from the station.
Neuenheim
Across the Neckar, at the foot of the Philosophenweg path.
Bahnstadt
A new low-energy district beside the Hauptbahnhof.
Food and drink
Student taverns in the old town serve Kurpfalz cooking — Saumagen, Pfälzer sausage and Riesling from the nearby Palatinate vineyards.
Practical notes
- The Hauptbahnhof is well outside the old town; take a tram or bus rather than walking with luggage.
- The funicular from Kornmarkt runs up to the castle and on to the Königstuhl summit.
- Mannheim, ten minutes away, is the ICE hub — many connections route through it.
